WHAT IS HAIR TRANSPLANT / HAIR TRANSPLANT SURGERY IN MONTREAL?

Hair transplantation is performed on people who have generalized hair loss, the onset of baldness, or a recession of the hairline. Male pattern baldness develops only, in the shape of a horseshoe, around the head (recession at the hairline, thinning vertex on the crown or at the top of the scalp). However, the female pattern of hair loss consists of a diffuse reduction of hair on the head.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a natural hormone, is the main reason for hair loss in both men and women. However, the hairs behind the head are resistant to the effect of DHT. Therefore, they are perfectly suitable for transplantation, as they are genetically programmed to maintain their native color for a long time and never fall off.

Dr. Doumit meticulously dissects these follicular hair units (bundle of 1 to 4 hairs that emerge from the entire natural scalp) at the back of the head. Then, he plants precisely these follicular units, creating the most natural and undetectable hair growth possible.

Hair transplantation will improve your appearance and self-confidence.

Women with diffuse hair loss are not good candidates for hair transplantation, as they usually do not have enough quality hair on the back of their head. However, women with the following conditions are excellent candidates for hair transplantation: women with male pattern baldness, traction alopecia (hair loss due to traction), or scar alopecia (hair loss at scar sites or due to a previous burn).

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HAIR TRANSPLANT AND REPLACEMENT SURGERY?

The different types of hair replacement surgery procedures used by Dr. Doumit include:

EXTRACTION OF FOLLICULAR UNITS:

Very small holes no larger than 1 mm in diameter are made around each individual hair follicle at the back and side of the scalp. Each individual follicle will then be lifted with forceps from the donor's scalp section and transplanted to the bald spots. The scar lesion is much less VISIBLE than the tape technique. This makes it more appealing to many patients, especially those who have chosen to cut their hair very short at the back of their head.

FOLLICULAR UNIT TRANSPLANTATION (LINEAR BAND METHOD):

A strip of scalp will first be removed from the back of the scalp (donor section). The lesion is then closed with absorbable sutures using a trichophytic closure technique, which produces a linear scar. The scar will become almost unnoticeable over time in most patients over time. The donor band will then be divided under the microscope into naturally small groups of 1,2,3 or 4 hairs, called follicular units for hair transplantation. Dr. Doumit will then anesthetize the recipient's scalp and make very small incisions, called recipient sites. The follicular unit grafts are then placed precisely in the recipient sites.

SCALP REDUCTION OR FLAP SURGERY:

After injecting the scalp with a local anesthetic, a section of the bald scalp is removed and the adjacent flap of skin bearing the hair is lifted off the surface while still attached to one end. The skin of the scalp is moved into the baldness and sewn into place. The results of flap surgery are immediate. One flap usually has the capacity to do the job of 350 grafts.

HOW IS HAIR REPLACEMENT SURGERY/TRANSPLANTATION PERFORMED?

Hair transplant in Montreal is performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia. Dr. Doumit will design and mark your new hairline with your active participation. The donor area (back of the head) is cut and anesthetized. The hair is removed either individually, as micrografts (Follicular Unit Extraction) or as a strip of skin (Follicular Unit Transplantation), which is then divided individually.

1) Donor site: If a strip of hair is removed, the incision is then sewn back together. If the hair is removed individually, there will be no incisions or scars.

2) Hair transplant transplantation: If a strip of hair is used as a donor's hair, the tiny grafts are divided for hair transplant surgery in your bald areas.

3) Recipient site: The recipient's scalp is anesthetized and small slits of about 1 mm are made in the scalp using a needle. The hair follicle grafts are then precisely inserted into the slits so that the transplanted hair will grow in a natural direction.

Once the hair transplant surgery is complete, your scalp will be cleansed and covered with hydrophilic gauze. You should wear a pressure bandage for 48 hours after the procedure or spray saline frequently on the planted surface to speed up healing.

Microslit Follicular Unit Extraction is the preferred hair restoration technique performed by Dr. Doumit. It is the state-of-the-art technique of hair restoration surgery. It removes the scar from the donor site and almost all the drawbacks of previous surgical techniques.

WHAT RESULTS SHOULD I EXPECT?

Hair transplantation does not produce immediate results. In the majority of patients, hair transplants fall out after hair replacement surgery. The hair will begin to grow back three months after the procedure. Donor sites in hair transplant follicular unit extraction leave little to no scar. In follicular unit transplantation, the incision heals gradually, leaving a linear scar hidden by the hair around the site. In general, multiple hair transplant procedures may be required to achieve complete satisfaction. It is usually recommended that at least six months between each session.

WHAT DOES CONVALESCENCE CONSIST OF?

Dr. Doumit goes to great lengths to minimize discomfort during the procedure. Dr. Doumit prescribes powerful pain medication for use at home. Most of our patients don't use them at all.
Patients can return to work a few days after surgery. Some patients may have swelling of the face and eyelid.

IS HAIR REPLACEMENT/TRANSPLANT SURGERY SAFE?

All surgeries carry some risks. Possible complications of hair transplant surgery include: poor growth of hair follicles, unnatural appearance of the transplanted hair, scarring at the donor or recipient site, tightness, infections, bleeding, skin necrosis.
